What was the Earl of Strafford’s aims in Ireland?
His ultimate goal was to assimilate Irish law and customs to the English system and to make a prosperous Protestant Ireland into a source of revenue to the English crown.
What did Strafford want to do to the Irish Church?
He wanted to impose Laudian uniformity on the Irish Church, so he introduced the Anglican 39 Articles to Ireland in 1634. This was met with opposition from Irish Catholics and puritans in England.
What financial changes did Strafford make in Ireland?
Strafford raised customs duties to make Ireland contribute to the Exchequer, instead of making a loss. This frustrated the Irish merchants. He also persuaded the Irish parliament to grant subsidies, in 1634 Strafford forced them to vote 6 subsidies. This annoyed the Irish people as they had to pay more tax and they saw how their parliament was being dominated.
What did Strafford do to the army?
He used the increased revenue to build an Irish, catholic army for the Crown, paid by the Irish. This created fear and outrage in England.

11 Years Tyranny - Strafford showed how absolutism could be imposed through prerogative courts, using Ireland as a model for England.
