What are individual level theories?
Theories that focus on individuals and their interactions.
What are structural level theories?
Theories that emphasize social structures, processes and systems and how they shape an individuals life.
What is the Medical Model ?
It is a physiologically based theory that focuses on a diagnostic, this diagnostic becomes the individuals main identity. modern day social work is shifting away from this.
What is the Functional Theory?
The functional theory states that problems arise from a negative experience but can be over come using ones personal power to effect change
the client is viewed as the expert.
What is the strength based theory?
Supports the client by helping them recognize a strength in their life or something they are good at and use that as a building block for more strengths in the feature.
What is the social systems theory?
Based on the idea that society consists of a series of interdependent systems and these systems effect and individual (family, church school)
states problems arise when there is a lack of fit between and individual and their surrounding. A problem in 1 area may cause a problem in another
What is the structural approach?
Focuses on the impact of primary and secondary structures on an individuals life
primary: racism, classism, capitalism…
secondary: family, community, personality
What is Feminist social work?
Women centred approach that strives to understand particular experiences of oppression in relationships and the broader society.
looks at economic, social, cultural, physical structures and gender inequality.
What is critical Social work?
Most influential in social work, it works towards changes in economic, social and political structures by encouraging critical thinking.
What is Anti-oppressive practice?
Draws on many theories but aims to recognize that people experiences are shaped by the society in which they live and that many problems arise by oppressive structures of society.
What is Anti-racist social work?
Similar to AOP but focuses on race and how it impacts the lives and outlooks of people of colour.
