What are Social Services?
Personal or Community services that aim to help people improve their well-being
ie. Childcare, Child protection and women’s shelters
What is Income Security?
Benefits to supplement income of maintain income levels
ie. Employment insurance, social assistance, old age security…
What is meant by the Welfare State?
It means there is a system in place that protects the health and well-being of it’s citizens - particularly those in social or finical need. (range of programs and services)
We have this in Canada.
What are the three approaches to social welfare?
Residual, instutional and the structural approach
What is the residual view to social welfare?
The idea that the government should had a very limited response to human need, individuals needs should be met through family and the market economy, government should only step in when these sources fail.
What is the institutional view to social welfare?
state that welfare is a necessary public response that helps people attain a reasonable standard of life and health. it is understood that individuals cannot always meet their needs through family and work.
What is the structural approach to social welfare?
a new approach that considers the underlying problems of society to be linked to concentrations of wealth and power. The welfare state is the necessary contradiction to capitalism.
What are the 3 levels of social work practice?
Micro, Mezzo and Macro
Define social justice
Justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities and privileges within a society
Social workers generally support policies that redistribute wealth, promote equality and equal opportunities.
What is an example of social justice?
Racism, child labour, classism…
Define Globalization
interaction and integration among the people, communities and governments of different nations, it is a process driven by international trade and investment.
What effect has globalization had?
There is a greater concentration of wealth and power in global corporations only benefiting a small few.
When these large institutions fail it has an effect on the ENTIRE WORLD.
it effects income security
-cutbacks and strict eligibility criteria mean that many are left without bare nessecities.
Define Neo-Librism
it is an approach to economics and social studies in which control of economic factors is shifted from a public sector to a private sector.
What are the effects of Neo-Librism?
it discourages government programs and encourages the purchase of services from private providers
it promotes policies that expand opportunities for businesses but shrinks funds for human services.
