Causes
A
- Malaria parasite (Plasmodium) that lives in RBC
- transmission by female anopheles mosquito
- Plasmodium Knowlesi; most common in SEA

A
- contaminated blood transfusion (from infected donor)
- organ transplant
- congenital malaria
- syringes and needles

Clinical Manifestations
A
- fever, headache, chills
- nausea, vomiting
- muscle and joint pain
- rigor (2nd stage)
- tachycardia, hypotension, thirsty
- sweating

- Antipyretic

Complications
A
- severe brain infection (seizures, confusion)
- pulmonary Edelman (fluid in lungs)
- anaemia
- kidney failure
- abnormal liver function
- leukocytopenia
