2. Homostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is:
. the REGULATION of the INTERNAL CONDITIONS of a CELL in RESPONSE to an INTERNAL or EXTERNAL CHANGE
What can homeostasis control?
Homeostasis can control:
. BLOOD GLUCOSE CONCENTRATION
. BODY TEMPERATURE
. WATER TEMPERATURE
. WATER & ION LEVELS
What do control systems contain?
Control Systems contain 3 parts:
. RECEPTORS CELLS - that DETECT STIMULI (changes in the environment)
. COORDINATION CENTRES eg brain, spinal cord or pancreas
. EFFECTORS egf MUSCLES OR GLANDS which bring about responses that restore optimum levels
What is the Nervous System?
The Nervous System
Which organ produces urine?
Urine is produced in the KIDNEYS
Where is URINE stored?
Urine is stored in the BLADDER
What produces UREA?
Urea is produced in the LIVER
What is UREA?
Urea is:
. Urea is produced from the breakdown of excess amino acids in the liver.
What organ gets rid of carbon dioxide?
The LUNGS get rid of CARBON DIOXIDE
What organ helps to regulate the BODY’S TEMPERATURE?
The SKIN helps to control the BODY’s TEMPERATURE
How is water lost from the body?
Water is lost from the body by:
. URINE
. SWEAT
. By BREATHING OUT
. In FAECES
After taking a type of recreation drugs, the keynes produce very little URINE. What happens to the cells if the kidneys produce very little urine?
If the kidneys only produce very little urine the cells:
SWELL and become damaged and poisoned by UREA
Why should sports drink contain ions?
To replace IONS lost in SWEAT
Why should a person with DIABETES NOT drink too much sports drink?
A person with DIABETES should not drink too much sports drink as it contains
TOO MUCH GLUCOSE & it would their GLUCOSE levels rise too HIGHLY
Which two structures make up the CNS (Central Nervous System)?
Which two structures make up the CNS (Central Nervous System)?
BRAIN & SPINAL CORD
