1. Blood & Circulation Flashcards
What is BLOOD?
BLOOD is:
. a tissue
. it is made from a liquid called PLASMA
. PLASMA has the following suspended in it:
- RED BLOOD CELLS
- WHITE BLOOD CELLS
-PLATELETS
Features of RED blood cells
Red Blood cells
. NO nucleus & so if packed full of HAEMOGLOBIN to ABSORB OXYGEN
. it is transports from the LUNGS to the TISSUE 7 CELLS needed for RESPIRATION
. VERY SMALL so they can fit through the tiny CAPILLARIES
. shaped like BICONCAVE DISCS giving them a LARGE SURFACE AREA so OXYGEN can DIFUSE across
Features of WHITE blood cells
WHITE blood cells:
. help to protect the body against INFECTION
. can CHANGE SHAPE so they can ENGULF & DESTROY invading micro-organisms
What are PLATELETS?
Platelets are:
. FRAGMENTS of cells which COLLECT at WOUNDS & start BLOOD CLOTTING
What are BLOOD VESSELS?
Blood Vessels:
. blood passes AROUND THE BODY in blood vessels
. There are 3 types of blood vessels:
1 ARTERIES -
3 types of blood vessels.
What do Arteries do?
Arteries
Take blood FROM HEART to your ORGANS
Thick WALLS
3 types of Blood Vessels?
- Arteries
Take blood FROM your HEART to your ORGANS
Thick muscular walls
- Veins
Take BLOOD from ORGANS back to your HEART.
Thinner walls to prevent BACKFLOW
- Capillaries
Allow substances to flow in and out of the BLOOD into the CELLS
NARROW, THIN walled
The HEART pumps blood around the body in what sort of SYSTEM?
A DOUBLE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM pumps blood around the body
What job do the LEFT ATRIUM & RIGHT ATRIUM DO?
The left and right ATRIUM received the blood from the VEINS
What do the left & Right VENTRICLES do?
The left & right ventricles pump the BLOOD OUT INTO ARTERIES
What makes the blood flow in the correct direction?
VALUES makes sure that the blood flows in the right direction.
What are pacemaker cells
PACEMAKER cells act to control the resting heart rate - they are located in the RIGHT ATRIUM
What blood vessel carries blood AWAY from the HEART?
ARTERIES carry oxygenated blood away from the HEART
