19. Mycoplasma & Chlamydia Flashcards
1
Q
What is Chlamydia?
A
genus of:
- small
- non motile
- obligate intracellular bacteria => absolutely needs a eukaryotic cell to live inside for survival & replication (cuz it lacks ATP pdn)
2
Q
Chlamydia cannot be visualised by gram staining bcuz..
A
- has a lipopolysaccharide membrane but lacks peptidoglycan
=> atypical bacteria
3
Q
How does Chlamydia replicate?
A
- forms intracellular inclusions within the cytoplasm of host cells
- inclusions can be seen by light microscopy
4
Q
How is C. trachomatis transmitted?
A
- through oral, vaginal & anal sex
- can be passed from mother to baby during delivery, causing pneumonia or serious eye infections
5
Q
How is C. trachomatis detected?
A
PCR test
6
Q
C. trachomatis is treated w what ABs?
A
- Tetracycline: Doxycycline
- Macrolides: Azithromycin, Erythromycin
7
Q
What are the symptoms of C. trachomatis?
A
8
Q
What is Mycoplasma?
A
genus of smallest free-living bacteria
- can pass through filters used to remove bacteria
- pleomorphic (round to filamentous)
- has cell membrane but no cell wall => cannot take up gram stain
- natural resistance to penicillins
