17. Coliforms & Pseudomonas Flashcards
What is Enterbacterales?
An order/family of gram -ve, non-spore forming, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria
What are Coliforms?
- all coliforms are members of the Enterobacteriaceae family
- but not all enterobacteriaceae are coliforms
List the Enterobacterales (in our syllabus)
EKEPSN
Coliforms:
1. E. Coli
2. Klebsiella
3. Enterobacter
Non-coliforms:
4. Proteus
5. Salmonella
6. Non-typhoidal salmonella
Enterobacterales can be identified by..
MALDI-TOF
Coliforms are commonly found in..
- major component of intestinal flora
- GIT of humans & animals
- plants, soil
- non-resident/transient members of oral & oropharyngeal flora

[T/F] Coliforms are gram +ve
False. They are gram -ve.
- aka produce endotoxins in outer membrane
[T/F] Coliforms are facultative anaerobes

- prefer aerobic conditions but able to grow even in anaerobic conditions
How is Salmonella transmitted?
via ingesting contaminated food/drinks
