1.9 Active Transport Flashcards
(3 cards)
Ehat is active transport?
Is the movement of particles from an area of of low conecntration to an area of high concentration against their concentration gradient.
-requires energy from respiration which is why its called active as energy is needed to carry molecule across membrane
Importance of active transport in root hairs
-take up water and mineral ions from the soil
-mineral ions are usually higher concentration in the cells, meaning diffusion cannot take place
-this requires energy from respuration to occur
Improtance of active transport in gut
-substnaces such as glucose and amino cauds from your food have to move from your guy into your bloodstream
-sometimes there can be a lower concentration of sugar molecules in the gut than the blood, meaning diffusion cannot take place
-active transport is required to move the sugar to the blood against its concentration gradient
