1.7 Osmosis Flashcards
What is omosis?
-the movement of water from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution one through a partially permeable membrane.
Dilute and concentrated solutions
-Dilute solution of sugar has a high concentration of water and low concentration of sugar
-concentrated sugar solution contains low concentration of water and high concentration of water
Water moves from a dilute solution to a concentarted solution across the membrane of cell
Partially memerable membrane bag
-cytoplasm contains, salts and shgars, so therefore okaced in a dilute solution, the water will move in
In a visking tube there is a bag which is partially memerable with concentarted sugar solution inside and it is placed in a less concentared sugar solution. In the process the bag will expand and there will water up the tube because of osmosis as water is travelling from dilute solution into a concentrated solution. This will make the bag have more pressure meaning water will go up the tube as well. Will move through partially permeable membrane
Isotonic,hypotonic and hypertonic
-if the concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is the same as the internsl concentration, the solution is isotonic to cell so normal.
-if concentration of solutes in solution outside the cell is higher than the internal concentration, the solution is hypertonic to cell so shrivelled
-if concentration of solutes in solution outside the cell is lower than internal concentration, the solution is hypotonic to cell so will burst
Osmosis in animals
-If external solution is mor dilute it will move into animals cells causing them to burst
- on other hand, if external solution is more concentrated excess water will leave the cell causing it to become shrivelled
