Motivation: I feel comfortable discussing condom use with a partner. My friends all use condoms. Condoms alter sex this way or that way
Behavioural Skills: I know how to put one on and how to ask my partner if they have them, how to express my desire to use one
Two primary types of sex ed programs in North America
Comprehensive
Abstinence-only
Comprehensive sex ed programs?
Operate on the understanding that most will have premarital sex. Teaches about having safe sex as well as abstinence practices. Teaches strategies to avoid negative outcomes
Abstinence-only sex ed?
Refraining from sex until marriage
Doesn’t talk about contraceptive
Doesn’t talk about positive sex outcomes or negative sex outcomes!
Why are abstinence-only programs terrible?
Don’t decrease likelihood of
- sex
- STIs
- unwanted pregnancy
Ignores sexual diversity! Disadvantages some youth and LGBTQ+!
Withholds vital information for VOLUNTARY and INFORMED decision making!
Components of effective sex ed programs!
- Theoretical foundation
- Clarity of messages taught
- Appropriateness towards age and audience
- Activities related to sexual communication! And navigating social norms and beliefs and misconceptions regarding sex
