He was born on the 8th of September 1887 in the village of Pattamadai on the bank of the river Tamraparani in South India.

he was suggested to go to Rishikesh for intense Dhyana practices.

Here he met his Guru, Swami Visvananda Saraswati. After some time he initiated Dr. Kuppuswamy into Sanyasa and named him Swami Sivananda Saraswati.

n 1936, he established the Divine Life Society intending to spread spiritual knowledge and selfless service to humanity.

He established Sivananda Ayurvedic Pharmacy in 1945 and started prescribing Ayurvedic treatment to patients.

His teaching style is highly revered as Sivananda Yoga which he referred to as Yoga of Synthesis. It is a harmonious development of the ‘hand’, ‘head’, and ‘heart’ through the practice of Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Raja Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga.

He wrote approx 296 books on various subjects such as Metaphysics, Vedanta, Yoga, Psychology, etc.

14th of July 1963, Swami Sivananda entered Mahasamadhi.
