1.6 Developmental Psychology Flashcards
Developmental Psychology
Study of the changes of a person over their life.
Causes of being sterile
> 20% abnormal sperm causes someone to be diagnosed clinically sterile. Marijuana, and pesticides make abnormal sperm.
Embryo
2-8 weeks after conception
Fetus
9 weeks after conception to birth
Spontaneous abortions
wrong number of chromosomes, or bad development
Stillborn
Pregnancy lost after 20 weeks
Newborn reflexes
Palmer grasping reflex, rooting reflex, sucking, moro, stepping, swimming. We lose them eventually because the voluntary part of the brain develops
Palmer grasping reflex
newborns grip things in their hands
Rooting reflex
newborns turn head and open their mouth if their cheek is stroked
Moro reflex
newborn shoots out arms and legs, then straightens. Caused when startled
Motor Development
90% learn to walk by 15 months. We don’t have much control over our rectum and bladder at first.
Talking to babies
People talk to babies in higher, louder voices with less words, shorter sentences, and repetition which helps them learn languages better.
Speech preferences
Babies prefer mother’s voice and language kid songs, and childish talk compared to adult talk.
Cognitive development
Frontal lobes develop most from ages 3 to 6. Brain cells die off if they aren’t used.
Baby Mozart
myth that Mozart makes babies smart. Listening to music doesn’t make a difference, but playing instruments does.
Hanlow
made a study with stuffed animals and a wire feeding monkey, and determined infant monkeys prefer contact more than food.
Lorenz
Studied imprinting, when goslings attach to the 1st moving object they see.
Ainsworth
studies attachment in humans with a strange situation procedure. A baby with a secure attachment cries when mom leaves them alone with a stranger, and grows up to have good relationships with people when an adult.
Adolescent Development
girls reach puberty around 11.5, boys reach it around 13.5. It is harder for early girls and late boys to go through it.
Erikson
Theorized that Adolescents try to answer “Who am I?”
Marcia
Adolescents go through stages of exploration and commitment.
identity diffusion
no commitment or exploration
identity foreclosure
commitment, no exploration
identity moratorium
no commitment, lots of exploration
