1.2 Nervous System Flashcards
Central Nervous System
Brain, Spinal Chord
Peripheral Nervous System
Somatic nervous system: voluntary movement
Autonomic nervous system: involuntary movement
Autonomic nervous system
Sympathetic nervous system: used when stressed
Parasympathetic nervous system: used when relaxed
Dendrites
branches on cell body of neuron. pick up chemicals and take them into the cell
Cell Body
manages cell, decides whether or not to send message
Axon
turns chemical message into electric message
myelin sheath
covers axon
terminal branches
things at end of axon, turn electrical signal into chemical one
neurotransmitters
chemicals used to transfer messages between neurons
synapse
space between neurons
How to neurons communicate?
chemically, electrically
What happens to neurotransmitters once released?
picked up by dendrites of another neuron, reuptake, enzyme deactivation
reuptake
terminal branches reabsorb neurotransmitters right after they’re released
enzyme deactivation
neurotransmitters that aren’t picked up are broken down by the body
Acetylcholine (Ach)
learning and memory, muscle movement
