1.3 Psychoactive Drugs Flashcards
Depressants
Decrease CNS Activity
Alcohol
Depressant. bad judgement, slows sympathetic nervous system -> slow reaction time, slurred speech. Being sleep makes you more drunk. Disrupts memory, less self awareness/self control, more GABA causes less anxiety, more Dopamine and Serotonin
Barbiturates/tranquilizers
Depressant. deadly when combined with alcohol.
Opiates
Depressant. decrease CNS functioning. Euphoric/pain-free. Examples are Morphine and Opium. Brain stops making natural opiates if taken too much, so they’re highly addictive.
Stimulants
Increase CNS Activity.
Methamphetamine
Stimulant. increases Dopamine. More addictive to men, very hard to break. Effects can last years after going clean.
Caffeine
Stimulant. 90% of humans consume it daily. Present in things like coffee and soda. Effects last 3-4 hours for normal doses and a healthy person, but can last much longer in special cases. Increases norepinephrine.
Nicotine
Stimulant. Present in smoking and smokeless tobacco. 7s to reach brain when inhaled, lasts 2h. Increases norepinephrine and epinephrine. Unlikely to pick it up if you are past early adolescence. low amounts cause energy, high amounts cause relaxation.
Cocaine
Stimulant. Increases dopamine which causes people to act like a schizophrenic. Originally in coca-cola.
Ritalin and Adderall
treats ADHD, functions from low arousal theory. Ritalin is a reuptake inhibitor, Adderall causes an increase in dopamine. It doesn’t help people without ADHD to concentrate any better.
low arousal theory
the idea that people with ADHD are so crazy because their body doesn’t produce enough dopamine, so they need to do more in order to feel anything.
Hallucinogens
Effect vision, creates images that aren’t real.
Marijuana
Hallucinogen. Causes Hilarity, relaxation, food cravings, perception and time distortions, hallucinations and delusions.
LSD
Hallucinogen. Found by someone accidently eating a mushroom. Time distortions, out-of body experiences, sometimes pleasant, sometimes very terrible. Memory loss, paranoia, nightmares, panic attacks, distortions lasting years. More serotonin and dopamine.
