-vision, motivation, dominant, initiative, inspiration, confidence –> this is known as the trait theory: set of characteristics that determines a good leader
manager definition
someone who tells people what to do and organise the resources to get the job done
leader definition
a leader motivates and inspires people to behave in a certain way
4 leadership styles

autocratic
definition: The leader makes all the decisions without consultation (Taylor)- believed employees should be treated as a cost not an asset
+ decisions are made quicker so more time efficient
+ better for unskilled workers
- only one persons opinion so not always right
- could be patronising

definition: the leader makes decisions but takes into account the welfare of the employees (mayo)- believed that workers who feel they belong to a team work more efficiently
+ get a variety of opinions but decision making can still be quick
+ meets social needs
+ valued as employees
- employees could be too reliant on the leader

definition: the leader allows others to participate in decision making. the leader still makes the final decision ( Mayo & Maslow)- treat employees like an asset
\+ get several views and opinions so the best decision can be made \+ employees feel valued \+ creative empowerment - takes longer to make final decision - disagreement/ conflict

laissez-faire
definition: the leader encourages employees to make their own decisions within certain levels (Herzburg/Maslow)
+ employees feel involved in businesses decisions= more motivated
+ freedom= empowers employees- motivates them to give best work
- could take too long because no one to lead the decisions
- don’t meet deadlines
- could be unskilled
