what are the characteristics of a leader?
- motivating and inspiring people

what is an autocratic leadership?
when leaders tell their employees what they want done and how they want it accomplished, without getting the advice of their employees.
pros and cons of an autocratic leadership?
+ high levels of control suitable for unskilled workforce
+ fast decision making
+ suitable for implementing a clear vision held by the leader
- can lead to low levels of motivation
- creates a lack of trust
- employees may not feel valued or respected causing high staff turnover
what is a democratic leader?
is a leadership style in which members of a group take a more participative role in the decision-making process
employees meet to discuss and resolve issues by giving everyone the same opportunity to contribute to decisions
pros and cons of a democratic leader?
\+ strong and clear vision for the future \+ more efficient problem-solving \+ honesty is prioritised - can lead to poor productivity and lack of motivation due to the lack of supervision - decision making is a long process
what is a paternalistic leader?
a managerial approach where there is a dominant figure that decides what’s best for the employees. employees treat them as extended family in return for trust, obedience and loyalty
pros and cons of paternalistic leadership?
+ absenteeism rates a staff turnover will decrease
+ employees feel more connected at work
+ feedback is invited and encourages which makes employees feel important
- low levels of motivation
- employees have no importance
- leaders may come across as unsure
what is a laissez-fare leader?
these leaders have an attitude of trust and reliance on their employees. they don’t get too involved or give too much guidance. instead they let employees use their creativity, resources and experience to help them reach their goals
pros and cons of laissez-fare leaders?
+ encourages creativity and innovation
+ creates an environment of independence
+ increases job satisfaction
- can cause laziness as employees are not supervised
- lack of control over the workforce
- tasks and work may not be co-ordinated very well
