what is motivation?
motivation is about the ways a business can encourage staff to give their best
what are some benefits of employee motivation?
- high labour productivity
- lower staff turnover
- lower unit costs
- lower absenteeism
- better workplace relationships
why are motivated employees beneficial for the business?
highly motivated staff leads to greater productivity which means less wastage and higher profitability for a business
what is taylors theory?
his theory is about scientific management
he said employees are motivated by money and improved efficiency by standardisation and division of labour
division of labour was that each job was broken down into smaller repetitive task which all employees should do in the same way. this minimised skill required but did not take into account that repetitive jobs are demotivating
what is mayos theory?
human relations theory
is based on the fact that employees have social needs and must be fulfilled through their work.
he believed that working in teams is more motivating than money. it’s about how well employees ,managers and directors communicate with each other and its the recognition and appreciation that increases job satisfaction and as a result productivity is increased
what is Maslow’s theory?
Maslow’s theory is the hierarchy of needs.
his theory focuses on the psychological aspects of motivation and the fact motivation comes from within an individual. this theory considers both financial and non financial incentives of work.
what are all the parts of Maslow’s theory?
self actualisation self esteem (esteem needs) love and belonging needs safety needs psychological needs
what is Herzberg’s theory?
two factor theory
Herzberg’s theory was that employees have hygiene factors which eliminate job dissatisfaction but will not motivate them anymore than they were already. but there are also motivating factors which increases motivation
what are the hygiene factors and the motivating factors?
hygiene factors - poor pay and compensation - poor working conditions - salaries/wages - job security motivating factors: - good leadership + good manager relationships - promotion and growth - feedback and support - recognition and status
