Democratic Leadership
A leadership style where managers allow other to participate in decision making
Democratic leadership features
- Participation
- Communication
- Workers & information
- Participation encouraged
- 2 way communication , which allows feedback from staff
- Workers given information about the business to allow full staff involvement
Democratic leadership Advantages (2)
1) Opportunities for employees to get involved - higher levels of motivation
2) Allows a manager to get opinions and ideas from all workforce
Democratic leadership disadvantages
1) Consultation & Communication can be time consuming
2) Employees may not see ‘bigger picture’ and may vote for decisions that benefit them
Laissez - Faire leadership
where employees are encouraged to make to make their own decisions and are given responsibility
Laissez - Faire leadership features
- Criteria
- Delegation
- Very broad criteria may be established for the staff to work within
- Manager delegates authority and decision making powers to employees
Laissez - faire leadership advantages (2)
1) Allows employees to make their own decisions
2) Can lead to higher levels of creativity and motivation among workers
Laissez - faire leadership disadvantages - 2
1) Lack of control over workforce - deadlines might be missed
2) Tasks may not be coordinated very well
3) confusion due to broad criteria
Factors that influence Leadership styles
1) Training & Experience of the workforce and the degree of responsibility they are prepared to take on
2) Amount of time available for consultation and participation
3) Attitudes of mangers & Management culture (What type of managers are they)
4) Importance of issues under consideration. Businesses may use different styles at different times depending on the situation.
E.g autocratic leadership maybe used if a decision needs to be made quick
