The process of identifying and hiring candidates to fill a role.
What is included in the recruitment process
Recruitment process includes the application, interview and other selection procedures such as assessment days
What is the purpose of recruitment
To ensure that all essential roles are filled by staff with the appropriate skills and experience

Internal and External recruitment
Internal recruitment
When the business looks to fill in vacancies from within its’s existing workforce
Pros of internal recruitment - 4
1) Cheaper & quicker than external recruitment
2) People are already familiar with the business and how it operates (May require less training because of this)
3) Provides opportunities with the business - can be motivating and may mean more staff retention
4) Business already knows the strengths and weakness of candidates - less risk when hiring as you know who is suitable for job
Cons of internal recruitment - 4
1) Smaller pool of potential applicants ( maybe better fits if hiring externally)
2) May cause anger & resentment amongst candidates not appointed
3)Creates another vacancy which needs to be filled
4) No new ideas can be introduced from outside
External recruitment
When the business looks to fill the vacancy from outside the business
pros of external recruitment - 3
1) Outside workers can bring in new ideas
2) Larger pool of workers meaning you can find best candidates
3) people may have a wider range of experience from outside the business compared to internal recruitment
cons of external recruitment
1) Longer processes compared to internal recruitment
2) Costly - due to advertising, interviews, private agencies + need to TRAIN staff as unfamiliar with business
3) Higher risk than internal recruitment - candidate may not familiar with business
