the process of increasing knowledge and skills of workers so that they are better able to perform their jobs
When is training required
- when new employees join the company
- new technology/equipment is introduced
- when new health & safety legislations is introduced
- there are new working practices

Pros of induction training (1)
The familiarisation with the company, polices and procedures
- employee becomes comfortable within the working practices and the business -> increased productivity & happiness as know what they are dong
On the job training
Examples of on the job
training
When training is given in the workplace by the employer.You are learning by doing/learning from others.
- learning from other workers
- Mentoring (providing advice to less experienced worker)
- Job rotation ( Worker spends time doing one job then another - eventually gains experience then can gain more specialist job) e.g lawyer 4 seats
- Graduate training programmes
Advantages on the job training - 3
- Output may continue as learning is actually done through doing the job.
- Relevant as trainees learn by actually doing the job - not learning anything extra/unnecessary
- can be cheaper and easier to organise e.g no costs incurred by travel and training done by another employee
On the job training disadvantages - 3
- Productivity may decrease as employees are taking away from their work to train newcomers
- training maybe ineffective - employees may pass down on bad working habits
- Output maybe lost if new employee makes a mistake
Off the job training
training which takes place outside the business by an external provider e.g training centres, colleges
Advantages-off the job training -3
- Output not affected is mistakes are made
- more motivation and loyalty as it’s an expensive way of training so employees may feel valued
- Workers learning not distracted by work - more focus on learning
Disadvantages off the job training - 3
-can be expensive if training is provided by specialist
-Some aspects of work cannot be taught off job + some aspect employees learn may not be relevant to the job
-May take time to organise e.g have to look for external training provider
