1.4.4 Motivation (Taylors Scientific Managment) Flashcards
What was Taylors approach called
Taylors scientific management
What was Taylors theory based on
based on improving the productivity and efficiency of the work force
What did Taylor argue about workers and their enjoyment towards work?
because of this, what do they need?
Argued that workers do not naturally enjoy work
because of this they need close supervision and control to ensure work is completed.
Taylor argued that managers and businesses should implement what sort of labour?
Division of labour
Division of labour
How many tasks did Taylor say workers should be given
Break down of production/work processes into many different small tasks which one worker specialises in.
One specific task
According to Taylor workers should be given what
why?
should be given appropriate training and instructions on how to complete that specific task
so that they can work efficiently and complete that task to a good standard
How did Taylor say workers are incentivised by?
Argued workers should be paid by…? ‘PRP’
Through money & Financial rewards.
Piece rate pay
Piece rate pay
A payment method in which employees are paid fixed amounts for each item produced.
Piece rate pay encourages workers to do what?
Encourages them to work and maximise their productivity
Cons of Taylor scientific management (TSM) (3)
1) TSM breaks down work into the ‘quickest & best way’ to complete work. - may not suit all workers as each employee has individual differences
2) Sees humans as work machines who are only motivated by money - ignores other factors that humans are motivated by e.g recognition of achievement
3) Boring & Repetitive task. No scope for creativity and responsibility which can lead to low levels of motivation
Pros of Taylor scientific management (2)
1) Higher levels of productivity & efficiency as workers trained appropriately to carry out only one task
2) Better quality - only one sole focus on one task
