What does having motivated staff mean?
Higher motivation leads to greater productivity which means less wastage and higher profitability for a business
What are the four motivation theories?
Herzberg, taylor, mayo and maslow
What did Herzberg state?
Employee satisfaction has two dimensions
1) hygiene- money, job security
2) motivational- achievement, responsibility
What did Taylor state?
That motivation is reliant on money, he believed the more productive, the more money you should get paid
What did Mayo believe?
Believed workers don’t just care about money also motivated by having social needs met eg; working in groups
What did Maslow believe?
There was a hierarchy of needs:
1) self actualisation
2) esteem
3) social
4) safety
5) psychological
What are 5 money motivational processes?
1) profit share
2)performance related to pay
3)piece work

What is profit share?
Employees paid an annual divide based on the firms levels of profit
What are 8 non-financial motivational techniques?
1) delegation
2) consultation

5) flexible working
6) job enrichment
7) job rotation
8) job enlargement
What is job enrichment, job enlargement and job rotation?
job enrichment= giving workers greater variety of tasks with greater responsibility
Job enlargement= giving workers more tasks of a similar nature of complexity to do
Job rotation= moving employees from one job to another
Problems and strengths of taylor:
Problems: -viewed people as machines, instead of humans in a social setting
-Taylor overlooked that people work for other reason
Strengths: -increases efficiency
-standardisation of procedures for work that reduces error
Problems and strengths of mayo:
-assumes workers and managers share the same goals
-it’s biased towards management, workers being manipulated into being productive by managers
Strengths:
-improved job satisfaction
-better communication as workers have open communication
Problems and strengths of Maslow:
-some levels do not exist in certain individuals
-problems when deciding what levels have been satisfied
Strengths:
-higher employee satisfaction
Problems of Hertzberg:
-problems with relying too much on what people say they find satisfying or dissatisfying at work as it’s subjective
