Point vs nonpoint sources
Single, identifiable sources of pollutants.
dispersed and often difficult to identify sources of pollutants.
Runoff of fertilizers and pesticides
Biodegradable pollutants
harmful materials that can be broken down by natural processes
Nondegradable pollutants
harmful materials that cannot be broken down.
-Lead, mercury, arsenic, any toxic chemical elements
-Can disrupt or degrade life-support systems
-Damage wildlife, human health, and property
-Create noise and unpleasant smells, tastes, and sights.
Pollution cleanup/Output pollution control
cleaning up or diluting pollutants after they have been produced
Pollution prevention/input pollution control
reducing or eliminating the production of pollutants
Pollution prevention/input pollution control
Only temporary relief
Usually is the cause of more pollution
Usually costs too much or is impossible to reduce pollutants to acceptable levels
Prevention is much better and is cheaper
