1.1 - Ecosystems Flashcards
What is a population?
A group of individuals of the same species.
What is a community?
All living organisms in an area.
What is an ecosystem?
All living and nonliving things in an area.
What is a biome?
A large area with similar climate conditions that determine plant and animal species there.
What is competition?
Organisms fighting over a resource like food or shelter.
What is predation?
One organism using another for energy.
What is mutualism?
A relationship that benefits both organisms.
What is commensalism?
A relationship that benefits one organism and does not impact the other.
What are herbivores?
Organisms that eat plants for energy; they are predators.
What are true predators?
Organisms that kill and eat prey for energy; they are carnivores.
What is a parasite?
An organism that uses a host for energy, often without killing the host and often living inside the host.
What is a parasitoid?
An organism that lays eggs inside a host organism; the eggs hatch and larvae eat the host for energy.
What is symbiosis?
Any close and long-term interaction between two organisms of different species.
What is lichen?
A composite organism of fungi living with algae; it provides nutrients for algae while receiving sugars (energy).
What is resource partitioning?
Different species using the same resource in different ways to reduce competition.
What is temporal partitioning?
Using resources at different times.
What is spatial partitioning?
Using different areas of a shared habitat.
What is morphological partitioning?
Using different resources based on different evolved body features.
