14. Data Analysis: Descriptive Stats (AS) Flashcards
what are the 3 parts of the measures of Central tendency?
averages - mean, median, mode
what are averages?
average is a numbers that represent typical values of a set of data
how is the mean calculated?
you add up all the items in a set of data and divide by the number of items
how is the median calculated?
arranging all the data in order from largest to smallest and then selecting the middle value is there a two values in the middle calculate the mean of these
how is the mode calculated?
you find the value that is most frequent in the dataset
what is the strength of the mean?
is a sensitive measure
what is a limitation of the mean?
it is easily distorted
what is the strength of the median?
it’s not affected by extreme scores
what is a limitation of the median?
it is less sensitive than the mean
what is the strength of the mode?
this is the only measure appropriate for categorical data
what is a limitation of the mode?
it is a very crude measure
what are the measures of dispersion?
measures like the Range and standard deviation that show the spread of the data
what is the range?
range is the difference between the highest and lowest numbers in a data set + 1
what is standard deviation?
standard deviation is a measure of the average spread around the mean
what is the strength of the range?
is easy to calculate
