1.4 Crude Oil And Fuels Flashcards

1
Q

What is crude oil? Why is it important?

A

A mixture of of a large number of compounds
Or
Locked up carbon and energy from the sun

We get many products from it

8
Q

What are the properties depending on the longer the carbon chain length gets for alkanes?

A

The stronger the intermolecular forces between molecules
Increasing boiling point (energy needed to break greater)
Higher viscosity
Lower volatility (evaporate slower)
Less flamable

12
Q

Describe factional distillation

A

Crude oil is place in a distilled column and heated in a continuous process
The different fractions have different boiling points because of the different carbon chain lengths
The larger the molecule the higher the boiling point
They vaporise at their boiling point
The vapour will rise and eventually cool and condense into a liquid
They condense at different points and are separated out the side at each specific level

A

Global dimming

18
Q

How can sulfur be removed from fuels before burning them?

A

Neutralise it with calcium oxide

19
Q

How is carbon monoxide or carbon soot created?

A

Incomplete combustion

Lack of oxygen

20
Q

Name two biofuels

A

Ethanol

Hydrogen

21
Q

What are the advantages of ethanol?

A

Little energy used to produce it
Made from renewable resources
Carbon neutral

22
Q

What are disadvantages of ethanol?

A

Pure ethanol is poisonous
Produces less energy than petrol
Increase in food prices (sugar)
Very flammable therefore dangerous

23
Q

What are the advantages of hydrogen?

A

Releases a lot of energy

Only product is water

24
Q

What are the disadvantages of hydrogen?

A

Difficult to extract for air or compounds
Difficult to store
Expensive
Uses fossil fuels to obtain

25
Q

Which do you think is the fuel for the future?

A

Ethanol
