13.8 Reflexes Flashcards
1
Q
What is a reflex action?
A
involuntary response
to a sensory stimulus
2
Q
Outline the steps of a reflex arc:
A
- RECEPTOR - detects stimulus & induces action potential in sensory neurone
- SENSORY NEURONE - carries impulse to spinal cord
- RELAY NEURONE - connects sensory neurone to motor neurone in brain/spinal cord
- MOTOR NEURONE - carries impulse to effector.
3
Q
What is a spinal reflex?
A
action in which the CNS part of the neural circuit
is in the spinal cord & not the brain
4
Q
What is a cranial reflex?
A
action in which the CNS part of the neural circuit
is in the brain & not the spinal cord
5
Q
What type of reflex is the knee-jerk reflex?
A
spinal reflex
6
Q
What type of reflex is the blinking reflex?
A
cranial reflex
7
Q
Outline the series of steps which occur to initiate the knee-jerk reflex:
A
- tapped below kneecap
- stimulus - stretching of tendon, causes muscle to contract.
- induces action potential in sensory neurone
- carried to relay neurone in spinal cord
- relay neurone inhibits motor neurone of flexor muscle, causing relaxation.
8
Q
How do reflexes increase the chances of survival?
A
- INVOLUNTARY
- decision-making regions of brain are not involved
- prevents brain from being overloaded with information
- NOT LEARNT
- provide immediate protection
- FAST
- short reflex arc, only 2 synapses which are the slowest step
- reflexes include everyday functions e.g digestion & balance
