14.2 Structure & Function of the Pancreas Flashcards
What are the 2 main function of the pancreas?
EXOCRINE GLAND - secrete protease, amylase, lipase
ENDOCRINE GLAND - insulin & glucagon
What is an exocrine gland?
produce enzymes
release via duct into duodenum
What is an endocrine gland?
produce hormones
release into bloodstream
What is the Islets of Langerhans?
specialised cells within pancreas
responsible for producing insulin + glucagon
What are the 2 types of cells composing the Islets of Langerhans?
alpha + beta cells
What is the function of alpha cells?
produce + secrete glucagon
What is the function of beta cells?
produce + secrete insulin
How can you tell the difference between stained Islets of Langerhans & pancreatic acini?
Islets of Langerhans stain lighter, & are large + spherical
Which of alpha and beta cells are larger & more abundant in the Islets of Langerhans tissue?
Alpha
Name the exocrine & endocrine tissue in the pancreas:
exocrine - pancreatic acini
endocrine - Islets of Langerhans
