1.3 Incarnation Flashcards
Define Incarnation
This means ‘made flesh’
The Christian belief that Jesus was both fully human and fully divine.
What does it say in John 1:1 about Jesus as ‘the word’?
‘In the beginning there was the word…and the word became flesh and dwelled among us’
Jesus was there at creation and he became human. It is clear that ‘the word’ or Jesus is a separate person from God.
Why did Christ incarnate?
The Bible teaches that the Son of God became a human being in the person of Jesus Christ.
God did this in order to live among people
teach people what God is like
help people to restore their relationship with God
SOW- mystery and analysis
“Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great. He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory. “ (1 Timothy 3. 16 /NIV)
How do Christians incorporate the Incarnation into their daily lives?
Christians celebrate the incarnation on Christmas Day by singing Christmas carols and remembering the story of the birth of Jesus.
Why is the Incarnation important?
Jesus came into the world to restore the relationship between humanity and God.
This means the incarnation allows Christians to have a relationship with God.
By experiencing what it is like to be human, God showed he could understand and identify with humankind.
The incarnation shows that God loves the world and everyone in it.
Define Hypostatic Union
The concept that Jesus is both divine and human.
Sources of Wisdom highlighting Jesus as human
Jesus was born as a baby to a human mother (Luke 2:7).
Jesus had a human body (Luke 24:39), human mind
(Luke 2:52) and a human soul (Matthew 26:38).
Jesus got tired (John 4:6), thirsty (John 19:28) and hungry (Matthew 4:2).
Jesus expressed human emotions like amazement (Matthew 8:10) and sorrow (ohn 11:35).
Jesus worshipped and prayed to God (John 17).
Jesus died (Romans 5:8).
Sources of Wisdom highlighting Jesus as divine
Jesus is ‘in very nature’ God (Philippians 2:6).
Jesus is omnipotent, all-powerful (Matthew 28:18) and omniscient, all-knowing (ohn 21:17).
Jesus forgave sins, something only God can do (Mark 2:5-7).
Jesus was without sin, only God is perfectly good (Matthew 4:1-10, Peter 2:22).
Jesus performed many miracles, too many to be all recorded (ohn 21:25). Even nature obeyed Jesus (Matthew 8:27).
Jesus was worshipped and prayed to (Matthew 2:11, 14:33, Acts 7:59).
Jesus was resurrected (Mark 16:1-20, Luke 24:1-53) and continues to be God (ohn 20:28).
SOW- God’s love for humanity
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)”
