ΣΤΡ.
S T R Y M O D O R O S Oh what lawlessness! For Stephanos committed many disgraceful acts.
Εϒ.
E U E R G I D E S If indeed Apollodoros is speaking the truth, Stephanos and Neaira have done
the most sacrilegious things.
For they have shown contempt for the laws of the
state (lit. on behalf of the state) and the gods.
ΣΤΡ.
S Τ R. It is probable, at least. For many people have borne witness that they have shown contempt for both the city and the gods.
I wonder what Stephanos will ever say in his defence.
ΚΩ.
K O M I A S Stephanos will say the sort of things which all defendants say in their defence, …
For you know well that all the defendants claim that they have performed their state duties patriotically…
Eϒ.
E U. Reasonably. For the dikasts have often acquitted those who have done wrong who can point out the virtues of their ancestors and their own good services.
But we know well that Stephanos is not rich,
nor has he been a trierarch,
nor has he been appointed choregos (chorus-financier),
nor has he been a good citizen,
nor has he done any good to the city.
and [the defendants claim…] that they have won many glorious victories in the games (contests) …
and [the defendants claim…] that they have accomplished much good for the city.
[… Stephanos will say…] that ‘I have been a good citizen’ and ‘I have been responsible for no disaster in the city.’
