1.2.5 Flashcards
What is the function of the skeletal system?
Movement, support and protection.
What does the skeletal system consist of?
All the bones in the body.
Why do you have the rib cage?
Protection around vital organs (lungs, heart) when playing contact sport.
Two types of join:
Hinge joint:- allows flexion and extension. E.G; knee and elbow.
Ball and socket joint:- more varied range of movement. Hip and shoulder.
What are the 5 types of movement?
Extension Flexion Abduction Adduction Rotation
What is the importance of weight-bearing exercise?
Increase bone density. Reduced risk of osteoporosis as person gets older since bones become naturally lighter.
E.G aerobics
What are the long term effects of exercise on the skeletal system?
Increased bone density. Exercise helps the bones become heavier and therefor stronger, particularly weight-bearing exercise.
Increased strength of ligaments and tendons. Become thicker and therefor stronger.
What are the potential injuries?
Fractures: -compound. -closed. -simple. -stress. Tennis and golfers elbow. Dislocation. Sprains. Torn cartilage.
What are compound fractures?
Broken bone which pierces skin.
What are closed fractures?
Broken bone but skin not broken.
What are simple fractures?
Partially broken: e.g green stick
What are stress fractures?
Cause by overuse. E.g running on a hard surface.
What is tennis and golfers elbow?
Pain in a joint cause by overuse.
What is dislocation?
Bone comes out of joint.
What are sprains?
Damaged ligament which requires RICE treatment.
