1.2.3 Flashcards
What are the short term effects of exercise on the respiratory system?
Breathing gets quicker - more oxygen into body
Increased depth of breathing - to supply working muscles with more oxygen
Oxygen debt
What is the function of the respiratory system?
To get air into the body and get carbon dioxide out.
What is oxygen debt?
During anaerobic exercise the body is unable to get sufficient oxygen to the working muscles. This oxygen needs to be paid back after exercise through heavy breathing. Body also need to get rid of carbon dioxide.
What recreational drugs effect the respiratory system?
Smoking damages lungs and alveoli, reducing the efficiency of the respiratory system and gas exchange.
What does the respiratory system consist of?
Trachea, ribs, diaphragm and lungs.
What are the long term effects of exercise on the respiratory system?
Increased lung capacity/volume - improved efficiency of lungs to get oxygen to working muscles.
Increased vital capacity - greatest amount of air that can be taken in and pushed out of lungs.
Number of alveoli increases - enables more efficient gas exchange.
