1.20 Flashcards
What are the different types of treatments of CVD?
Antihypertensives, statins, anticoagulant, platelet inhibitors
What are antihypertensives?
Drugs that reduce blood pressure. Some of them are diuretics (eliminate excess fluids and salts, decreasing vol. of blood) and beta blockers (block response of heart to adrenaline)
What are statins?
Group of drugs that lower the level of cholesterol in the blood -> block production of LDLs.
What are the side-effects of statins?
Very rarely they can trigger muscle inflammation which can be fatal. Sometimes they can cause liver problems, muscle aches and nausea.
What are anticoagulants?
Help prevent blood clotting too easily. Lowers prothrombin levels.
What are platelet inhibitory drugs?
Prevent blood clotting too easily - make platelets less sticky. Example - aspirin.
What are the risks of taking platelet inhibitory drugs such as aspirin?
It irritates the stomach lining and can cause bleeding in the stomach.
What are sympathetic nerve inhibitors ?
Sympathetic nerves are nerves connected from the central nervous system to the rest of your body , they stimulate your arteries to constrict which raises blood pressure . The inhibitors prevent the nerves from sending signals to the arteries so the arteries dont constrict and increase blood pressure .
Name an example of a sympathetic nerve inhibitors and what they do
ACE inhibitors . ACE inhibitors block the production of angiotenism , a hormone that stimulates the contraction of blood vessels
