1.16 Flashcards
What are the cardiovascular disease risk factors?
Smoking, diet, inactivity, genes, gender, age, high blood pressure.
What is the defintion of data validation?
To be able to evaluate the design of studies used to determine health risk factors, including sample selection and sample size used to collect data that is both valid and reliable.
Which of these documents may lack validity:
Magazine, science book, newspaper, article, blogs?
Magazines, newspapers and blogs
What is reliability?
Reliabiltiy is the overall consistancy
Which factors are modifiable?
Smoking, diet, inactivity.
Which factors are non-modifiable?
Genes, gender, age, high blood pressure.
Why is smoking a risk factor for CVD?
carbon monoxide- easily combines to haemoglobin, reducing oxygen carrying capacity, so heart has to work harder, can lead to high blood pressure, insufficient oxygen supply while exercising-chest pain, sometimes myocardial infarction.
Nicotine-stimulates production of adrenalin, increasing heart rate and pressure. Also makes blood “sticky” increasing risk of thrombosis.
Why is high blood pressure a risk factor for CVD?
Increased pressure means heart has to work harder to pump blood into arteries, therefore more chance to failure.
Artery walls thicken and may harden to resist pressure, restricting blood flow in lumen.
Why is diet a risk factor for CVD?
High salt diets, raises blood pressure.
High saturated fat diet, increases low-density-lipoprotein levels.
Who is most likely to get a CVD men or women?
Men. Estrogen decreases chance of building plaques
Why is age a risk factor for CVD?
Muscles fibers in the arteries lose elasticity therefore more damages happens therefore blood pressure rises.
Why is inactivity a risk factor for CVD?
Regular exercise helps lower blood pressure, reduce stress, prevent diabetes.
Exercise reduces formation of new plaques and keeps present plaques stable.
