1.13 Flashcards
what are antioxidants?
molecules that prevent the oxidation of free radicals which can be harmful, leading to the breakdown of organic molecules
where are they found?
in fruit and vegetables
Why are Antioxidants important?
To protect themselves from oxidising compounds, living cells make antioxidants whose jobs are to work together to prevent oxidative damage to important cellular molecules such as DNA.
can some antioxidants be beneficial
yes, some reduce the risk of heart disease!
example of antioxidant
vitamin C
why can vitamin C be dangerous
Taking vitamin C supplements can damage heart health
How can antioxidants have a negative effect on the body?
In high concentrations, antioxidants can convert into pro-oxidants (increasing oxidation with free radicals)
