1.11 Flashcards
What does Serotonin cause ?
Serotonin causes , smooth muscle of blood vessel to contract-narrowing vessel-cutting off the blood flow to damaged area
Which vitamin is vital for the production of the compounds needs for blood clotting ?
Vitamin K
What is thromboplastin and what does it do?
Its an enzyme that starts a sequence of chemical changes that clot the blood
What is thrombin and what does it do ?
An enzyme that catalyses the conversion of a protein called fibrinogen, into fibrin
What does Fibrin do?
Fibrin , an active , enzyme makes a mesh that traps red and platelets to make a clot
What is prothrombin?
Prothrombin is a soluble inactive protein in the blood that is a precursor of thrombin
What is fibrinogen ?
Fibrinogen is a soluble inactive protein in the blood that is a precursor of fibrin
What do platelets do ?
Platelets have two functions in blood clotting:
To form a platelet plug which temporarily coves the cut
To release serotonin and thromboplastin when exposed to collagen
