1.2 Ultrastructure of cells Flashcards
Endoplasmic reticulum
Smooth
- Synthesis of lipids and steroids
- Metabolism of carbohydrates
- Drug detoxification (liver cells)
- Regulation of calcium levels (Muscle cells)
Rough
- Has ribosomes, butnot permanent, picks up and drops them off
Microscopes
Compound microscope - >0.2 micrometres
Transmission Electron microscope - See inside structure of the cell
Scanning electron microscope - Shows 3D image of surface of specimens
Nanolive 3D microscope - Shows 3D shape, can see cells moving, can measure volume of cell
Eukareotes
4 kingdoms (protista, fungi, Plantae, Animalia)
Contain complex structures enclosed within membranes
Prokaryotes
2 domains - Eubacteria & Archaea (belong to monera)
No nucleus or any other membrane bound organelles
Divide by binary fusion (Copy DNA and split to duplicate)
Prokaryote structure
Eukareotic structure
Panceas cells
Produce enzymes to go into the small intestines to break down food and gain nutrients
Contain heaps of ER to produce lots of enzymes
Leaf Palisade cell structure
Leaf cellular structure
