1
Q
(borreliosis)
- caused by what?
- transmitted by what?
A
- borrelia burgdorferi (a spirochete)
- deer tick (ixodes)
2
Q
(borelliosis)
- how long must ticks be attached to transmit?
- once in skin, borrelia spreads through what?
A
- 48 hours
- connective tissue
3
Q
(borelliosis)
- what are the reservoir hosts?
A
- mice and other rodents
(migratory birds may carry deer ticks long distances)
4
Q
(borelliosis)
- where do most cases occur?
A
- NE and MN and WI
5
Q
(borelliosis)
- how many dogs show clinical disease?
A
- 5%
(subclinical infectino common)
6
Q
(borelliosis)
- how long for Cx to develop after exposure?
A
- 2-5 months
7
Q
(borelliosis)
(Cx)
- what is th most common clinical sign?
A
- polyarthropathy
(sometimes protein-losing glomerulopathy - esp in labs and goldens)
8
Q
(borelliosis)
(dx)
(ELISA and IFA antibody titers)
- do these diff between infection and vx?
- titer increaeses within 4 to 6 weeks after exposure
A
- no
9
Q
(borelliosis)
(dx)
(C6 antibody test is highly specific for B. burgdorferi)
- this test uses a c6 antigen that can detect C6 antibodies against an outer surface protein of Borrelia spp.
- why is this test good?
A
- diffs natural from vx (only nautrally infected dogs have C6)
also early infections can be detected, before Cx
10
Q
(borelliosis)
(tx)
- tx of choice?
- dogs that are seropositive but asymtpomatic don’t need treatment
A
- doxycycline

Q
(borelliosis)
(prevention)
