06 - Canine Distemper Flashcards
1
Q
(canine distemper)
- caused by what virus?
- affects a bunch of other species (not cats though)
A
- RNA morbillivirus in the paramyxoviridae family
2
Q
(canine distemper)
(transmission)
- main route?
- shed how long after recovery?
- doesn’t survive long in environment and easily killed by disinfectants
A
- inhalation
(but virus shed in all secretions and excretions)
- 1 to 2 weeks
3
Q
(canine distemper)
(pathogenesis)
- infects upper resp tract -> lymphoid tissues (liver, spleen, GI tract) causing severe immunosuppression) -> viremia -> epithelial tissues and CNS
- outcome depends on the immune response
A
4
Q
(canine distemper)
(immune response)
- if immune response is rapid?
A
- elemination with complete recovery and no clinical illness
5
Q
(canine distemper)
(immune response)
- if partial immune response?
A
- signs are mild and recovery occurs
may get neurologic signs from CNS localization
6
Q
(canine distemper)
(immune response)
- if poor?
A
- wide spread dissemitation of virus, clinical signs and high mortality rate
7
Q
(canine distemper)
(cx)

Q
(canine distemper)
(tx)
- symptomatic and supportive
- abx

10
Q
(canine distemper)
(prognosis)
- high mort in young pups
- neurologic deficits that occur are irreversible
