Traction
Sediment rolls or slides along the seabed
Saltation
Sediment is bounced along the seabed
Suspension
Small particles are held and moved in the water
Solution
Material dissolves in the water and is moved by the sea
Flocculation
Occurs where fresh water mixes with sea water such as in a river estuary. This causes clay particles to coagulate (combine) to form ‘flocs’ which are heavier and more likely to be deposited
Why does deposition occur
When the sea energy is too low to transport sediment
Sediment sorting
large sediment is deposited furthest from the sea by high energy waves and smaller material is deposited closer to the sea.
Material/sediment closer to the sea is prone to…
more attrition and being eroded into smaller particles
