Types of psychotherapy:
Psychoanalysis
Cognitive behavioural therapy
Emotion focused therapy.
Psychoanalysis
- Focus on conflict and trauma
- Transference: positive emotions expressed towards a new person if they remind you of someone you already like (Berk and Anderson, 2000)
Cognitive behavioural therapy
- focus on changing thoughts
- Attribution errors Beck (1976)
- Helps people make external, local, temporary attributions
emotion focused therapy
Greenberg (1993)- changing emotion by emotion. Signal concern provide clues about goal structure.
Effectiveness of therapy: Smith, Glass and Miller (1975)
Those recieving therapy fare better than 85% of people who dont.
Effectiveness of psychoanalysis
Batkam et al (1996) brief psychodynamic therapy as effective as cbt.
CBT compared to med
CBT more effective than medication alone, but medication better than placebo.
Layard (2006) depression report
- Therapy as effective as drugs in the short term, more effective in the long term
- Short term therapy 50% effective
- relapse for depression greater than anxiety
- CBT= 1 year depression free
Problems with therapy
- people dont get help
- often not trained in mental health

Emotional inteligence predicts happiness over and above personality factors (law et al., 2004)

EI can be learnt, increases with age- as does happiness.
Environmental influences on happiness - Circumstances
marraige, education and religion have small impact. Genetics could account for up to 50%
Environmental influences on happiness - income
Myers (2000) .17 correlation for income and happiness. When money is low.
Absolute income less important - rank within social group could influence happiness more (Boyce et al 2010)
