10. Human Interaction with Environment Flashcards
Community of species living together
Multiple populations of different species living together and interacting in the same area
Types of interactions (3)
Parasitism
Pathogenicity
Predation
Parasitism
A parasite organism living in or on a host organism causing harm to the host. Ex. Fleas live on mammal bodies feeding on their blood
Pathogenicity
An infectious microorganism (pathogen) living inside a host causing disease. Ex. Dutch Elm disease caused by fungal pathogen causes elm trees to loose leaves and die
Predation
An organism catching and consuming an animal or consuming a recently dead animal. Ex. Lions hunt and eat Zebras
Food Chain/ Web
Shows transfer of energy in an ecosystem
Shows interdependence of each organism on each other
Producers
Organisms that produce their own organic nutrients usually using energy from sunlight.
Plants are producers as they carry out photosynthesis to make glucose
Herbivore
An animal that gets its energy by eating plants
Carnivore
An animal that gets its energy by eating other animals
Primary consumers
Herbivores – they feed on producers (plants)
Secondary consumers
Predators that feed on primary consumers
Tertiary consumers
Predators that feed on secondary consumers
Decomposers
Bacteria and fungi that get their energy from feeding off dead and decaying organisms and undigested waste (such as faeces) by secreting enzymes to break them down
