What is information literacy?
Bundy (2004) defines it as being able to know when they need information, and then able to identify, locate, evaluate, organise and effectively use the information to help solve a problem.
Why is information literacy important?
It is important in workplace learning, lifelong learning and participative citizenship. It is a prerequisite for social inclusion, creating new knowledge, empowering someone personally and vocationally and learning for life.
What are some qualities of an information literate person?
Can tell what information is needed.
Can get the information efficiently.
Can evaluate the information and its sources.
Stores, classifies information gathered.
Uses the information to learn or solve problems.
Understands the cultural and legal issues using information.
Sees information literacy as part of independent and lifelong learning.

1. Task definition - Define the problem and what info is needed.
2. Information seeking strategies - Determine all possible sources and select best source.
3. Location and Access - Locate sources, find info within the sources.
4. Use of information - Engage (read, hear, view) and then extract relevant information
5. Synthesis - Organise from multiple sources
