06.2 Pharmacology of Asthma Flashcards
What are some examples of Beta 2 agonists?
Salbutamol, terbutaline, formeterol, salmeterol
Why is that drugs are needed to act on B2 receptors in asthmatic’s lungs and the sympathetic nervous system doesn’t cause bronchodilation itself?
No sympathetic nerves to the smooth muscle in the lungs
How do beta agonists work?
Binds to Gs proteins
Increase cAMP levels
Decreased Calcium
Decreased calcium binding to myosin light chains
AND potassium channels are activated leading to hyperpolarisation
All leads to smooth muscle relaxation
What are some ADRs and contraindications for beta agonists?
Skeletal muscle tremor
Tachycardia
Dysrhythmia
Contraindicated with beta blockers
What is the mechanism of action of methylxanthines?
Antagonise adenosine receptors
What are some ADRs of methylxanthines?
Tremor
Nausea
Nervousness
Tachycardia
What is an example of methylxanthines?
Theophylline, aminophylline
What is an example of a leukotreine receptor antagonist?
Montelukast
What are some examples of muscarinic antagonists?
Ipatropium bromide, tiotropium bromide
What are some ADRs of muscuarinic antagonists?
Dry mouth
Glaucoma
Tachycardia
What are some examples of inhaled corticosteroids?
Beclamethasome, Budenoside, Fluticosone
What is an example of an oral steroid?
Prednisolone
