05-10a: Manual Muscle Testing Flashcards

1
Q

Purpose of MMT

A
  • Gather “objective” data for treatment planning and assessment of effectiveness of treatment
  • Infomation regarding muscle strength of 1) specific muscles or 2) groups of muscles

Q

Reliability and objectivity of MMT

A
  • Not as reliable, valid and objective as other PT testing procedures
  • Individual interpretation of the resistance we applied and the muscle’s response

Numerical grading scales

A
  • Without + and -

- With + and - (less objective, increases variability)

Q

Types of MMT (3)

A
  • Resistance provided through full ROM
  • Resistance provided at mid-range (or specified test postition) after full ROM performed (break test)
  • Resistance using hand-held dynamometer: may be done as a “make” or “break” test

Q

MMT Procedure

A
  • Begin with pt perform AROM of movement AG
  • If complete full ROM, resist 1) through full ROM and grade, or 2) at test position an grade
  • If cannot perform against resist, grade at least 3
  • If cannot perform AG, less than 3
  • Perform AROM in GM
  • If perform AROM in GM, then grade 2
  • If cannot perform full AROM in GM, palpate contraction for grade 1

Q

Against Gravity (AG)

A
  • Gravity is part of the resistance
  • Grades 3-5: Body party performs ROM AG
  • Perpendicular to floor

Q

Gravity Minimized (GM)

A
  • Grades 2 or lower
  • Body part moves parallel to the floor

Documentation

A
  • Body part/muscle or motion tested
  • Grade of MMT
  • Pt response (if needed): pain, tenderness
  • End-feel if unusual noted,
  • Non-standard testing position
17
Q

Need to know…

A
  • Muscle location
  • Muscle O, I, A, N
  • Direction of muscle fibers, line of pull
  • Substitutions
  • Full AROM
  • Stabilize proximal segment of joint being tested
  • Muscle can fatigue
  • No short cuts with MMT
