03.2 Hernias Flashcards
What are the borders of the inguinal canal?
Floor - Inguinal Ligament
Roof - Internal oblique/transverse abdominis
Posterior wall - Transversalis fascia
Anterior wall - Aponeurosis of external oblique
What is a direct inguinal hernia?

What are the borders of Hesselbach’s triangle?
Inferior - inguinal ligament
Medial - rectus abdominis
Lateral - inferior epigastric artery
What is an indirect hernia?
Protrudes through the deep inguinal ring (usually as a result of the failure of embryonic closure)
Where do epigastric hernias occur?
In the midline between the xiphoid process and the umbilicus.
Where does a femoral hernia occur?
In the empty space in the femoral canal.
What is an incarcerated hernia?
Hernia cannot be reduced.
What is a strangulated hernia?
Constriction of blood vessels preventing blood flow to the organ.
Name three common sites for a hernia to occur at.
Inguinal
Femoral
Umbilical
