As children grow and learn, their ability to perform more activities with their bodies and understand actions improve can be affected by?
Size and age. While most motor development skills have age-specific target ranges, the skills are also influenced by children being small or tall for their age, their weight, and their mental development.
Define Environment
In the child’s life this has a large effect on motor skill development. The more opportunities they have to develop both gross and fine motor skills, the faster their capacity increases.
Define Genetics
Affected by both parents these are passed on to you from your parents, can be weak, they may have slower motor skill development than general guidelines suggest for their age range.
Define Muscle Tone
This can affect motor skills, the stronger a child is, the more ability they may have to move and control their body.
Define Biological Sex
Divided into two groups. Those groups being males and females. This plays an important role in how children develop as males often have more advanced motor skills than females because they are typically stronger and more aggressive physically. But females often have more advanced eye and hand coordination.
Motor Skill Development at ages 1 to 2
Fine motor skills would be holding and drinking form a cup, turning knobs, and stacking blocks. Ex. of gross motor skills at this age would be climbing and going down steps with support and starting to run.
Motor Skill Development At Ages 3 to 4
Fine motor skills would be beginning to dress themselves and using a fork and spoon appropriately. Ex. of gross motor skills at this age would be climbing, jumping, running, and kicking a ball.
Motor Skill Development At Ages 5 to 6
Fine motor skills would be coloring within the lines, using a knife correctly and with supervision, and writing their name. Examples of gross motor skills at this age would be skipping and throwing and catching a ball.
