What is ringworm?
A fungus
Common in many mammalian species, (horses, sheep, cows, ovines, pigs)
Itchy circular lesions on the skin
What is orf?
Spread through broken skin
Spread from sheep
Can vaccine against it, but live so can cause orf in you
Survives months/ years in environment
What is hantavirus?
Virus common on rats, which are common on farms
Causes acute/ chronic kidney failure in humans
From dust and aerosols of rat uriem
What is toxoplasmosis?
Abortion diseases from sheep
Transmitted by cats and faeces of cats
Flu like symptoms, but can cause abortion or foetus complications with humans
What is cryptosporidium?
Notifiable disease
Mostly affect young children and immunosuppressed
Found in gut of animals (mostly cattle and sheep) or faeces in water
What is giardia?
Transmitted via ingestion of contaminated food and water
Animals infected—> pigs, sheep, horses, cats and dogs
Can also be spread person to person
What is Q fever (Coxiella Burnetti)
Mostly in sheep, cattle, and goats
Usually no symptoms in animals, but can cause abortion
In humans often flu symptoms
What is E. coli?
Mostly common in Weaner calves (can cause calf scour)
Usually transmitted though ingestion of food and water contaminated with faeces
Symptoms are usually diarrhoea or bloody diarrhoea
What is chlamydia abortus?
Enzootic abortion of ewes
Usually results in ovine abortion
Causes abortion, still birth and maternal illness in women
What is leptospirosis?
Caused by contaminated rats
Can caused abortion or milk drop in cattle
In humans causes intense frontal lobe headaches and flu like symptoms
(Makes you go yellow like a Simpson)
