ZOO Flashcards
What are the main roles of modern zoos?
Scientific institutions to study:
- genetics, animal behaviour, animal husbandry and welfare, pathology, nutrition, health
Centres of conservation
Education
Jobs
Why is it good that children see animals in real life?
They are more likely to engage in conservation projects if they have interacted or seen the animals in real life
How do zoos help with conservation/
In situ —> support and funding from zoos to give treatment in field
Ex situ —> breeding programmes
Slow biodiversity lost
Train future generatioins
How do zoos help with research?
Easier access and closer proximity
Zoonotic diseases
Inform husbandry and welfare
Training future researchers
When do you need a zoo license?
If you’ll be displaying wild animals publicly for more than 7 days a year, except a circus or pet shop
What are the challenges of managing captured wildlife?
Difficult to reflect natural:
Space requirements —> amount and complexity
Behaviour —> social, breeding, seasonality, migration
Climate
Cognition
Diet
What are some examples of preventative healthcare in zoos?
Vaccination
Prophylactic mediation
Biosecurity
Hygiene
Enclosure design
Carcass disposal
Health monitoring
What are the three stages of preventative healthcare?
- Primary —> avoiding development of disease (vaccination)
- Secondary —> early detection of disease (preventing development)
- Tertiary —> minimise complications, maximise quality of life
What are the juvenile (first) health checks like?
Abnormalities unlikely
Baseline assessment
Coincides with additional procedure like microchipping
What is an elderly health check like?
Priorities welfare/ duty of care
Abnormalities likely
Monitoring of health conditions
Checks treatment progress
Decision making
